How Does Trenchless Pipe Bursting Work?

pipe bursting method

Nu Flow South Pacific offers minimally invasive solutions for restoring pipelines. We usually recommend trenchless pipe bursting for replacing pipes that are severely damaged or past their prime. It doesn’t involve extensive excavation, making it ideal for replacing pipes beneath streets, sidewalks, or buildings. But how does it exactly work? Here’s a quick overview of the process:

Accessing the Pipe

We locate the damaged pipe and create access points at both ends before performing trenchless sewer repair in Kihei, HI. We do this by digging small pits at each end of the pipe or by using existing access points such as manholes.

Inserting the Bursting Head

Next, we insert the bursting head into the old pipe through one of the access points. We attach the bursting head to a cable or rod connected to a winch or hydraulic system.

Breaking the Old Pipe

We pull the bursting head through the pipe, breaking it into small pieces and making it easier to remove. This part of trenchless pipe replacement may seem disruptive, but it actually isn’t. Rest assured it won’t cause disturbances to the surroundings.

Installing the New Pipe

As we break apart the old pipe, we simultaneously pull the new pipe through the space created by the bursting head. The new pipe used for trenchless sewer replacement is usually made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) or other durable materials.

Finalizing the Installation

Once the new pipe is in place, we connect it to the existing pipeline and test it for leaks and other issues. We then backfill the access pits and restore the area to its original condition.
